Indiana Unemployment Insurance Benefits
Unemployment insurance benefits in Indiana assist unemployed workers who have lost their jobs through no fault of their own. This safety net helps to maintain economic stability as Indiana residents search for new work.
Under the Federal Unemployment Tax Act of 1939 in the United States, employers pay taxes that cover the costs of administering unemployment compensation, plus other employment service programs at the state and federal levels. No employee wages are withheld to help cover the costs of unemployment insurance benefits or any additional unemployment-related state services.

How To Qualify for Indiana Unemployment Benefits
In Indiana, claimants must show the following to qualify for UI benefits:
The claimant must have earned sufficient previous income during the base period for review. The eligibility amount is determined by Indiana guidelines and is specific to the type of work performed.
- The claimant must have lost employment through no fault of his or her own.
- The claimant must be physically and mentally able and available to accept suitable work if and when it is offered.
- The claimant must be able to show that he or she is actively seeking a new, full-time job.
Keep in mind that individual determinations are made on a case-by-case basis, determined by the documentation submitted. If you aren’t positive that you meet all eligibility criteria, your best course of action is to apply and find out for sure.

How To Apply for Indiana Unemployment Benefits
It’s fast and easy to submit your initial claim for unemployment assistance through Uplink CSS, Indiana’s online services for unemployment insurance claims. It’s a good idea to watch the online tutorial the state provides before you submit your claim, which may help prevent errors that could delay your receiving your benefit payment.
If you do not have access to the Internet, you also may contact your nearest full-service WorkOne Career Center so that someone can assist you with submitting your claim. You can also apply online using a WorkOne computer station if you visit during normal business hours.
Managing Your Unemployment Benefits
For each week that you expect to receive unemployment assistance, you must document that you remain eligible to receive UI benefits. You will be asked to do so through Indiana’s Uplink filing system, using the same account you created when you submitted your initial claim.
When you submit your weekly certification, you will be asked a series of questions designed to determine your continued eligibility. For example, you will be asked to report your job-search activities for the previous week, along with any wages you earned and any job offers you received. It’s important to file your certification each week. Failure to do so could mean a delay in receiving your unemployment compensation.
Filing an Appeal
Once your initial claim is submitted, you will receive a formal determination of eligibility, which will appear as a message on the homepage of your Uplink account. If you disagree with this decision, you have the option to request an appeal, as does your employer. Your appeal will be heard by an Administrative Law Judge.
To request an appeal, you should complete a written statement that includes your name, your Social Security number, your mailing address and phone number, and a full description of why you believe the decision regarding your claim is in error.
You should submit your request for appeal within 10 days of the final date listed on your determination of eligibility. Be sure to keep a copy for your records.
Submit your request in any of the following ways:
Fax: 317-233-6888
Mail:
Indiana Department of Workforce Development
Attn: Appeals Division
10 North Senate Avenue
Indianapolis, Indiana 46204

Reporting Fraud
Fraudulently collecting unemployment benefits by providing misinformation, not reporting earnings, or using someone else’s identity is a serious crime. Unemployment fraud wastes taxpayer dollars and potentially keeps needed financial assistance away from those who may be most in need.
Indiana’s Department of Workforce Development aggressively pursues any reported acts of fraud committed against its unemployment insurance benefits program. In addition, the department works collaboratively with other state agencies to check employment and unreported earnings.
If you believe someone is committing unemployment insurance fraud, the state of Indiana asks that you file a report as soon as possible that includes as much information as you can provide.
