HUD Announces $171 Million in Funding for Native American Communities

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) recently announced that it is making over $171 million available for Indian Country. 

This includes $95 million for the FY21 Indian Housing Block Grant (IHBG) Competitive program that helps Tribes maintain, develop, and operate affordable housing (Read HUD’s FY21 IHBG Comp NOFO) and $76.5 million for the FY21 Indian Community Development Block Grant (ICDBG) to develop community facilities, carry out public works projects, and provide economic development assistance (Read HUD's FY 21 ICDBG NOFO). 

This funding primarily benefits low- and moderate-income persons in American Indian and Alaska Native communities.

"HUD is committed to ensuring our American Indian and Alaska Native communities have the resources they need to ensure affordable housing and critical infrastructure projects,” said HUD Secretary Marcia L. Fudge. “The funding announced today will further support Tribal communities’ ability to Build Back Better and address the housing needs of low-income individuals across Indian Country."

Applications for the FY 2021 ICDBG Program NOFO are due to HUD on October 25, 2021, and the FY 2021 IHBG Competitive Program NOFO are to HUD on December 1, 2021. Tribes and Tribally-Designated Housing Entities (TDHEs) are encouraged to read the NOFOs for additional information.
