California Medicaid (Medi-Cal) Benefits

Medi-Cal is California's Medicaid health care program. This program pays for a variety of medical services for children and adults with limited income and resources. 

California Medicaid is supported by federal and state taxes. It is a large program made up of many separate programs designed to assist Californians in various family and medical situations.

Eligibility Requirements

To be eligible for California Medicaid, you must be a resident of the state of California, a U.S. national, citizen, permanent resident, or legal alien, in need of health care/insurance assistance, whose financial situation would be characterized as low income or very low income.

You must also be one of the following:*

• Pregnant
• Be responsible for a child 21 years of age or younger
• Blind
• Have a disability or a family member in your household with a disability
• Be 65 years of age or older

* ACA Medicaid expansion covers eligible low-income adults.

Annual Household Income Limits (before taxes)

*For households with more than eight people, add $6,038 per additional person.

Copayments

For most individuals who enroll in Medi-Cal, there is no premium, no copayment, and no out-of-pocket cost.

For some Medi-Cal households, there is a monthly premium of $13 per child up to a family maximum of $39 per month.
