South Carolina Medicaid (Healthy Connections)

Healthy Connections is South Carolina's Medicaid program. It is a medical assistance program that helps pay for some or all medical bills for many people who cannot afford medical care. The program also assists adults over 65 and individuals with a disability.

Eligibility Requirements

To be eligible for South Carolina Medicaid, you must be a resident of the state of South Carolina, a U.S. national, citizen, permanent resident, or legal alien, in need of health care/insurance assistance, whose financial situation would be characterized as low income or very low income.

You must also be one of the following:

  • Pregnant
  • Be responsible for a child 18 years of age or younger
  • Blind
  • Have a disability or a family member in your household with a disability
  • Be 65 years of age or older

The following beneficiaries do not have copayment requirements:

  • Children under 19 years of age
  • Pregnant women
  • Institutionalized individuals
  • Members of a Federally Recognized Indian Tribe
  • Members of the Health Opportunity Account (HOA) program

The following services are not subject to a copayment:

  • Medical equipment and supplies provided by DHEC
  • Orthodontic services provided by DHEC
  • Family planning services
  • End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) services
  • Infusion Center services
  • Emergency services in the hospital emergency room
  • Hospice benefits
  • Waiver services
